Mere Toil

On a chilly sunday afternoon Witham took to the field against Mere CC. Some very disciplined bowling from G Hyde and guest B Yeo and tidy fielding made it difficult for the openers to get going.

H Gibson and G Hyde removed the openers for 22 and 9, both caught by South African ringer B Parry in the covers. H Gibson pithched one short and got dispatched to cow corner, un-flustered, he changed his grip to produce a beautiful pitched up out swinger next ball to get the batsman to nick off to T Hyde behind the stumps. The next ball Gibson had the batsman stone dead LBW. Things were looking good at this moment for Witham but the burly G Cassidy put the bowlers to the sword and brought up his century. The Mere innings ended after 35 overs on 223-7.

After tea the Witham openers strode out and very soon after W Wild strode back after running himself out. The runs didn't come easy and wickets fell regularly. A lot was resting on B Parry. After some large sixes he was bowled for 45.

Any hopes of winning were gone but T Hyde and B Yeo put on a good partnership which put to shame some of the higher order batsmens efforts. Balls were dispatched regularly but after 35 overs Witham finished on 155-7 with T Hyde 34* and B Yeo 37*.
